Curriculum Intent
History at Wakefield Methodist School will enable pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our History curriculum will develop a wide range of historical skills and strategies, giving children the opportunity to work as historians, to explore and investigate key periods in history.
At Wakefield Methodist School, we want children to understand how the world, the United Kingdom and Wakefield has become what is it today by exploring and questioning the past. Our aim is to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the past and how this has impacted on their lives today.
History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. We will encourage children to compare and contrast different experiences across different civilisations and relate this to their lives as children in the 21st Century. Through studying the lives and events of the past, children will develop an empathy and understanding of how history effected different groups in society and consider how the world has changed over time.
Curriculum Implementation
The Curriculum has been planned carefully to ensure all children build on their historical knowledge and skills year on year. Topics have been planned to engage and enthuse children's learning, whilst taking into consideration previous learning and how to move them further on in their learning as eager Historians. Our History Progression Map demonstrates the skills we would expect our children to learn over their time at Wakefield Methodist School.
Through a carefully planned progressive-curriculum, teachers plan engaging topics which they think will inspire, challenge and motivate children to learn. During their time at Wakefield Methodist, children’s skills and knowledge are embedded and developed.
Curriculum Impact
At Wakefield Methodist School, we are preparing our children to live in a diverse and dynamic society. As Theodore Roosevelt said, ‘The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.’ Children will leave Wakefield Methodist School as confident investigators who can critically question information presented to them, skills which will not only prepare them to continue their History journey in Key Stage 3, but that they can then continue to apply to any situation in their adult lives. Children will be able to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, examine arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Children will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
