Physical Education

Curriculum Intent

Wakefield Methodist J, I and N School aim to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from EYFS to Year 6 not only enjoy but also get the chance to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. Bu using the GetSet4PE scheme we intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that is progressive and inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed our school values. We fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

Curriculum Implementation

P.E. is taught as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas. To ensure that PE is being taught to the highest of standards, staff are provided with opportunities to participate within structured mentoring sessions, during which they develop their PE knowledge and pedagogy, by working alongside a sports coach. These sessions take place over the course of a half term and allow teachers and teaching assistants to become more confident within the teaching of the PE curriculum. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting festivals with other schools in the area and after school clubs whilst play leaders supervise sports activities at lunchtime.

In EYFS

PE is an important aspect of learning and children become more confident using gross motor skills. By the end of their time in upper foundation, they will have good control and co-ordination through the completion of large and small movements. Pupils will be able to move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. Children will be able to use various pieces of apparatus. Pupils have continual access to climbing equipment, balance bikes, scooters, balls and a range of building materials across the provision.

In KS1

P.E in Key Stage 1 aims to encourage and motivate pupils to participate in a range of sporting activities and highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils develop their skills across a range of areas by following the GetSet4PE scheme. We provide pupils in Key Stage 1 with cross curricular learning opportunities through the provision of Tagtiv8 sessions, in which pupils develop their Maths and English skills, through physical activity. Pupils are invited to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities which take place weekly after school and take part in pyramid competitions. Pupils are assessed termly so that development can be monitored.

In KS2

KS2 pupils develop their skills across a range of areas by following the GetSet4PE scheme so that they have 2 hours of high-quality P.E per week added to this, pupils within Year 4 participate in weekly swimming sessions at Sun Lane Swimming baths UKS2 children participate in Sports Leader training so that they can run structured sporting activities at lunch time alongside a sports coach from Wakefield School Sports Network. We provide pupils in Key Stage 2 with cross curricular learning opportunities through the provision of Tagtiv8 sessions, in which pupils develop their Maths and English skills, through physical activity. Pupils within KS2 are provided with a range of interschool competitions to participate in, which possess pathways to participate in area and county finals, provided to us by ACE’s sport. Pupils are assessed at the end of each year to monitor progression.

Extra-Curricular Activity

We offer a range of after school clubs, which are run by qualified coaches from Wakefield School Sports Network, for pupils in both KS1 and KS2. Added to this children are given the opportunity to wear Moki bands to encourage increased activity and we encourage children to walk to school as part of the WOW walk to school initiative. We also offer a wide-range of inclusive sports including boccia and new-age curling which provide opportunities for SEND pupils to increase their activity levels.

Curriculum Impact

P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At Wakefield Methodist J, I and N School, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed our school values of kindness, respect, perseverance and trust.
